Northern Kentucky University’s Valerie Gaerke lived out that dream on Thursday night in Regents Hall. “I knew time was running down, and it was either going into overtime or we would get the last shot and win the game,” Gaerke said of her short jumper with one second remaining that gave the Lady Norse a heart-stopping 82-80 win over previously unbeaten St. Joseph’s. “I didn't want to make another pass, so I drove in, put it up and luckily, it went in.” In doing so, the 5-foot-10 sophomore from Ft. HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Liz Holmes is the new queen of the kill at Northern Kentucky University, and her official coronation took place Friday night in Regents Hall. Holmes became NKU’s all-time career leaders in kills as the Norse posted a 30-26, 30-22, 29-31, 30-22 victory over Drury. The 5-foot-10 middle hitter finished with 27 kills and surpassed Bethany Gastright’s NKU record of 1,702 in the third game when she converted an attack off an assist from Natalie Forbes. The match was stopped at that point with NKU holding a 10-5 lead, and Holmes received the ball from Gastright while receiving a standing ovation. The Cincinnati Mercy High School product now has 1,714 kills at NKU. Holmes attacked at a .512 clip for the match and added 16 digs as NKU improved to 21-5 overall, 10-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Just one day after the General Assembly approved $54 million for a special events center at NKU, university administrators on Wednesday briefed the school's board of regents about a study to evaluate the pros and cons of going to Division I or staying in Division II. School officials said they plan to have a recommendation ready for regents to vote on later this year. "The Board of Regents is very interested in this," NKU President Dr. James Votruba said.
