(This story was originally published on March 10, 1997) By Tom Gamble Kentucky Post sports editor INDIANAPOLIS — Every time the Northern Kentucky University basketball team steps onto the Regents Hall court for practice, the Norse are reminded of their six preseason goals. But, when NKU players check the list posted inside their locker room today, they’ll find only one goal remains unaccomplished — a goal that has been their only real objective since last March. “Winning a national championship is what we're really out to accomplish,” said senior forward LaRon Moore. “If we don't do it now, we won't have another chance. We’re this far, so (there’s) no reason to lose now.” Moore made sure the Norse didn’t lose Saturday, scoring 20 of his career-high 35 points in the second half to help No. 2 seed NKU defeat Oakland (Mich.), 101-87, in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional final before 1,550 at Nicoson Hall. That’s when Kerry Lewin was officially crowned the NCAA’s Queen of Aces and elevated Northern Kentucky University volleyball into the national spotlight. On Oct. 25, 1995, Lewin served up her 510th career ace during a four-set victory against Mount St. Joseph. NKU’s standout outside hitter eclipsed the previous NCAA all-time record of 509, much to the delight of a large crowd that had gathered in Regents Hall to watch Lewin leap into volleyball history. Lewin’s devastating jump serve was virtually impossible to handle for most back rows at the NCAA Division II level. The Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team, which received shocking news late Sunday night in the form of a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Tournament, took it out on No. 2 seed Ashland University, 4-0, Wednesday at the AU Sports Complex. It wasn't even that close as the Norse (20-1) secured their third consecutive 20-win season. Betsy Moore scored a pair of first-half goals in the NCAA Tournament opener. Moore, who was named Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year last week, opened the scoring at the 28:12 mark with an unassisted goal. (This article was originally published on Nov. 13, 1995) Special to The Post HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — Northern Kentucky University's Kerry Lewin is regarded as a magician on the volleyball court around the Great Lakes Valley Conference, and the 5-foot-8 senior has shot down many opponents with her powerful jump serve. In her final college match on Saturday, Lewin made Indiana-Purdue/Ft. Wayne’s bid for a third straight GLVC championship disappear with her all-around performance. And in doing so, Lewin helped NKU win its first GLVC title since 1985. Lewin dominated IPFW — finishing with 25 kills, three aces and 29 digs — as NKU posted a 11-15, 15-7, 15-7, 15-7 victory in the championship match of the GLVC Tournament at Regents Hall. The NKU cross country team qualified for the 1979 NCAA Division II nationals. ------------------------------------------------------ Steve Kruse isn’t just a head coach at Northern Kentucky University. No, he’s more of a reluctant landmark on the Highland Heights campus, a statue of adaptive perseverance and impassioned longevity. A nearly six-decade association with the NKU cross country program — both as a runner and head coach — has made Kruse a modern connection to the infancy of the athletics program. It wouldn’t be accurate to say he’s a walking history book, simply because Kruse’s best known in the area of running. And, in 26 years as cross country head coach, he’s built a program that’s successful both academically and athletically.
